The Autumn Equinox is a moment of perfect balance; for this one brief moment we get balance between day and night, light and dark, before we head into the colder shrouded winter months.
Across many cultures, the Equinox is a time for reflection; the wheel of the year turns, the harvests have been gathered, we see the coming of the dark, the symbolic fading of the light.
I can easily imagine the emotional time this was for our ancestors – I often felt the same way knowing the soul-crushing dread of going back to school. (Perhaps that was just me?
Long before timepieces, people marked the equinox in stone. At Callanish in Scotland, Castlerigg in Cumbria, and even at Stonehenge, alignments catch the rising or setting sun at this balance point.
Imagine the labour and precision it took to place these megaliths so exactly — monumental calendars tracking the Sun’s journey through the year. To stand in their shadow on the equinox is to join a tradition stretching back thousands of years: watching the light fall exactly where it should, knowing the builders once stood in that same spot to witness the same moment. The mysteries may remain, but the emotional pull still resonates.
It does make me wonder about those Neolithic builders. Did they stop for tea breaks every half an hour? Did they say they needed to pop off for more supplies from the Flint Knapping wholesaler, while doing jobs on someone else’s roundhouse?
Anyway, back on topic. My own creation, Lunaesium, echoes this celestial harmony. A unique alloy of bronze (for the Sun) and silver (for the Moon), it embodies the meeting of light and dark, day and night. You can read more about it on my page all about Lunaesium.
Other stones also carry the equinox’s balanced energy:
Labradorite – flashes of light within a dark body, a literal play of light and shadow.
Moonstone – linked to cycles and balance, its glow shifting with the light.
Hematite – grounding and stabilising, often used for equilibrium in body and mind.
Citrine & Smoky Quartz – golden warmth paired with earthy grounding, perfect for holding both sides of the seasonal shift.
Wearing or working with these stones at the equinox is a way to carry that cosmic balance into the months ahead — a reminder that light and dark are not enemies, but partners in the turning of the year.
